Is music tutoring the same as music lessons?

Not really.. Music lessons are usually focused on a particular instrument like the bass guitar or classical piano, whereas music tutoring usually covers a particular academic course, like HSC Music 1 & 2 or a university undergraduate degree in composition. If you want to learn to play the guitar, you should look for individual lessons from an experienced guitar player. If you want to achieve academic success, you should find a tutor who understands core music courses, music theory, and the core music curriculum taught in high schools and universities.

What sort of qualifications should my music tutor have?

Unlike regular music lessons, tutoring is designed to support you while you complete high school or university coursework. Learning basic piano, for example, can usually be achieved through entry level lessons and piano playing practice, whereas helping you to prepare for your HSC or VCE Music practical usually requires someone who understands the core music curriculum. Some tutoring services provide both, so it is important to be clear about what you need. Committed music tutors often have years of experience and directly relevant qualifications. They might have experience as a professional musician (classical musician or contemporary musician), or they might have studied at a well known institution like the Sydney Conservatorium. Many have actual high school teaching experience. Check out the BorisDoes Tasker List to find the music tutor that's right for you.

Will a tutor come to me?

The important part is that your music tutor can focus on you as an individual student. Learning at home can work for some students, while others prefer to learn in a dedicated space like a music studio. Some may offer online lessons as a preferred form of study. It will often depend on your tutor’s approach to music tutoring. If you have a preference, discuss it with your tutoring Tasker or Business.

Will my tutor have instruments for me to use?

During junior years of high school (Years 7 to 10), most schools provide instruments for students to use, and students may or may not have their own instruments at home for tutoring. By the time students begin a HSC or VCE Music course, they have selected an instrument (or 2) and they have instruments of their own for practice that they can also use for tutoring. If you don't yet have your own instrument, it's important to check what your tutor can provide. Some have a collection of quality instruments and can bring one (or lease one) for tutoring purposes. Of course, it's quite easy if your instrument is your singing voice.
